This bursary was established by a donation from Gloria Barter, daughter of William Barter. William Barter was born in 1907 and lived his entire life in Bay de Verde. He was a successful fisherman, committed community leader, and founding member and chairman of the Bay de Verde Co-operative. The co-op ran a general store and a cod liver factory, and supported local fisherman by providing loans which increased their autonomy and ability to negotiate the best price for their catch. William Barter was a member of the first town council from 1950-51 and was particularly interested in community affairs, politics and the sustainability of the fishery. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader. He believed education provided the ability to choose your path and achieve your goals, no matter what your occupation.

One bursary will be awarded annually to a student studying in the Marine Environmental Technology program. Preference will be given to a Canadian student who has completed the first year of the program. Preference will be given to a student with a particular interest in fisheries conservation. This bursary will be awarded in the winter/spring semester.

This award of marine reference books is to be presented annually to a qualified student of the Ministry of Transport Nautical Certificate program. This award comes from the annual interest of a memorial trust fund set up by Mrs. Anne Butler in memory of her late husband who was lost at sea when the Arctic Explorer sank.

Donated by Alpha Beta Signa Phi in remembrance of Mel Freid who lost his life in the Ocean Ranger disaster. This award is presented annually to a student who shows initiative and enterprise in the field of marine safety or to assist in a research project in marine safety.

These leadership awards were established by the Fry Family Foundation, an organization that contributes significantly to student scholarships and awards throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The foundation is dedicated to building stronger communities and developing future talent for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards at the Fisheries and Marine Institute will be granted annually to up to two undergraduate students enrolled in an undergraduate program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. The successful applicant must demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her Marine Institute program, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement.

The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Scholarship Committee and faculty recommendation. Applicants must complete The Fry Family Foundation Student Leadership Awards at the Fisheries and Marine Institute Application.

This endowed bursary was established from a gift from the Estate of Anthony Green Ayre, who joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the outbreak of World War II and served in the Atlantic and Pacific from 1941-1945. Following the war he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and became the Commanding Officer of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Naval Training Division. He was also an area officer of the Sea Cadets and devoted to community service.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, one or more bursaries will be awarded annually to full-time students who meet the academic requirements for a bursary. First priority will be given to a student(s) registered full time in the Bachelor of Maritime Studies Program or the Bridge Watch Technical Certificate. Second priority will be given to a Nautical Science student(s) studying beyond first year.

The Rose Hatfield Healthy Living Award is to be awarded annually to a student who demonstrates a high level of academic ability and dedication to healthy living. The award is in honour of Rose Hatfield, a recreation specialist at MI who has been committed to healthy living for over 25 years via her position at the Marine Institute and her involvement in activities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

This award was created from a generous contribution from the Hebron Project. The Hebron Project co-venturers are ExxonMobil Canada Properties (operator), Chevron Canada, Suncor Energy, Statoil Canada and Nalcor Energy. Awards will be available to full-time or part-time students, enrolled at any campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, who have aboriginal status, a disability, or who represent a visible minority. Students with a disability should provide supporting documentation (from a medical doctor, psychologist, audiologist, rehabilitation counselor, or other professional who has specific training, expertise, and experience in the diagnosis of this condition).

Students will claim aboriginal and visible minority status through self-identification. Of those eligible students, further preference will be given to students who are majoring in engineering, the geosciences, environmental science or chemistry. Normally, at least one award will be granted in each designated area and where possible, at least one award will be granted to a student in his/her first year of study. The Marine Institute student awards will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship.

This endowed memorial award was established from a generous gift from The Howse Family. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, the award will be given annually to a student enrolled in a Marine Institute program who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to helping other students.

The award shall be based on academic performance and contribution to fellow students’ academic and personal development. It is based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee and will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This Award was established by the family and friends of Captain Patrick Miller. Captain Miller was a sea captain and well known businessman from Fogo Island. Throughout his 70+ year career within the marine industry he owned and navigated more than 30 vessels. A lifelong mariner he sailed and operated his business in local NL waters as well as along the eastern seaboard of North America.

This award is given to a student who has graduated from high school on Fogo Island and who is beyond first year in one of the following fulltime Diploma of Technology programs at the Marine Institute: Nautical Science, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or Marine Engineering Systems Design. Preference will be given to a demonstrated record of active community involvement, volunteer work, helping fellow students and/or service at Memorial University or on Fogo Island.

If the Award is not awarded in one year then two may be awarded the following year. It is based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee and will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This award was established by a donation from Kraken Robotic Systems Inc. in memory of Dr. F. Mary Williams. In her capacity as Director General of the National Research Council Institute for Marine Dynamics, Dr. Williams was a catalyst for innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond. She embodied the principles of applied research and partnership with the maritime industry. These principles are ingrained in the culture of the Marine Institute, an organization that Dr. Williams collaborated with often, with faculty and staff on Arctic and oceans related projects and research. She was a review committee member integral in moving forward MI’s Master of Technology Management Program, a program that was first introduced to MI’s program offering in 2010. One award will be given annually to a student studying beyond first year in a four year School of Ocean Technology program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. Preference may be given to a female student, recognizing Dr. Williams’ passion to support the increased participation of women at all levels in science and engineering. Preference may also be given to a student who demonstrates financial need. This award will be given in the fall semester by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee.

This Award was established by two generous donations as a part of the Moving Forward Together Campaign by the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland and the Presentation Sister of Newfoundland and Labrador. Moving Forward Together is a Canada-wide campaign to bring fundamental and lasting change to Aboriginal communities in Canada by supporting healing and educational programs.

Valued at $1800.00, it will be awarded to an undergraduate Aboriginal student at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, with preference given to a student beyond their first year of studies. The Award is given annually and is renewable for an additional two years. The student must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University. This award will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This award was established by a generous donation from the Public Service Credit Union. Public Service Credit Union has been contributing to charitable organizations and scholarships since 2012, and is proud to be a supporter of the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Valued at $500, an award will be given annually to an undergraduate student at the Fisheries and Marine Institute who has been accepted to participate on a Marine Institute team related to a marine field of study, such as but not limited to the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Competition Team.

The award will be granted based on academic merit to a student who has displayed leadership and dedication to the team. Preference will be given to a student within the School of Ocean Technology. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee upon Marine Institute Faculty nomination.

This award has been developed in memory of Mr. Ian J. Reid, an individual who contributed greatly to his community. He was a veteran of World War 2 and maintained an active naval connection, and also served his community in a volunteer capacity with numerous community organizations. He was a smart business leader and was delighted to be the first chair of the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation.

This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee. Preference may be given to financial need.

This endowed bursary was established by the family of the late Roy A. Russell in recognition of the interest Mr. Russell had in providing employees with an opportunity to excel in their chosen activity and to achieve new goals. The bursary will be valued at a portion of the income on the endowment and will be awarded annually.

The recipient will be an entrance student enrolled in the first year of any program at the Marine Institute. The eligible student would have graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador situated off the Avalon Peninsula. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a bursary as defined by the University. The bursary will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee.

The successful applicant must demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her Marine Institute program, through academic work, professional work placements, and community involvement. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Scholarship Committee and faculty recommendation.
