RV Gecho II

A highly sophisticated inshore fisheries research vessel, the RV Gecho II was custom built for the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystem Research (CFER) to conduct research in coastal bays with unique habitats, inshore spawning and nursery habitats.RV Gecho II inshore fisheries research vessel

The vessel also provides CFER with the capability to monitor inshore and offshore species migration.

The 10 metre vessel operates in coastal waters off Newfoundland and Labrador and is equipped with:

  • two scientific echo sounders with five transducers (four frequencies)
  • double global positioning systems
  • a bridge echo sounder, radar, very high frequency and Sirius radios
  • oceanographic winch and conductivity, temperature and depth
  • remotely operated vehicle
  • fish tracking telemetry equipment
  • ichthyoplankton survey gear
 
Industry Vessels

MV Newfoundland Victor

CFER works with the fishing industry to conduct research and training utilizing local fishing industry vessels.

Newfound Resources Ltd. has dedicated a room aboard its newly christened offshore shrimp trawler, the MV Newfoundland Victor, to the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
