Through the School of Fisheries, MI is a world leader in fisheries related research. Work done in the school and its three research centres answer questions all along the fisheries value chain.

 
Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER)

Researchers at the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) are helping better understand fish stocks and the productivity of Newfoundland and Labrador's marine ecosystem through fisheries research. Specifically, CFER's mandate is to:

  • Focus research on Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries and the sustainability of stocks;
  • offer research and training opportunities to graduate students both locally and internationally;
  • collaborate with provincial, national and international governments;
  • collaborate with other researchers and institutions within Canada and worldwide.
 
Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR)

The Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) promotes the sustainable development of aquatic resources and protection of marine and freshwater Research - Fisheries - cod potenvironments.

CSAR conducts applied research and development, technology transfer, at-sea testing and education in the areas of:

  • Fisheries development
  • Emerging fisheries
  • By-catch and selectivity
  • Hydrodynamics testing
  • Industrial training and educational workshop

CSAR is also home to the world's largest flume tank, a primary testing facility for demonstrating and testing fishing gear and marine structures.

 
Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD)

The Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) is internationally recognized for its expertise and comprehensive research facilities in the seafood processing and aquaculture industries.

The Centre focuses on three main theme areas:

  • Seafood Processing
  • Aquaculture
  • Marine Bioprocessing

CASD possesses the largest pilot plant facilities of its kind in Atlantic Canada, with a combined area of nearly 1,400 square metres. Facilities include a 1,100 square metre state-of-the-art food processing pilot plant, an aquaculture facility and a marine bioprocessing facility.
