John Cross - 2013 Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Teaching Award
The Teaching Award recognizes exemplary contribution to the teaching and learning of the engineering and geoscience at Memorial University. The award has the objective of encouraging excellence in the current teaching of engineering and geoscience.
John Cross, a marine engineering instructor with the Marine Institute's School of Maritime Studies, is described by his colleagues as "someone who embodies and exemplifies that which is best of teachers of engineering" and by his students as one of the "smartest and best" instructors they have ever had.
Mr. Cross was recently named the first Marine Institute recipient of the teaching award from the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL). He was honoured with this prestigious award at PEGNL's annual general meeting and conference on June 14, 2013.
John Tucker - 2012 President's Award for Distinguished Teaching
John was the recipient of Memorial University of Newfoundland’s 2012 President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching. The President's Award for Distinguished Teaching is given in recognition of a faculty member's continued record of excellence in teaching at Memorial University. The citation that accompanied John's award is reproduced below.
John Tucker, School of Maritime Studies, Marine Institute
John Tucker worked with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science before joining the Marine Institute in 1999, teaching courses in mechanical engineering. It was teaching distance courses where he found his niche, delivering math-based materials which many students can find challenging using traditional distance delivery models.
Over the years, he has developed tools and teaching methods for use in his distance, blended and in-class courses.
His teaching strength lies in his ability to optimize student learning opportunities by developing customized educational tools and corresponding teaching methods. Students and colleagues characterize his teaching using two words – responsive and innovative.
His teaching tools include digital video, electronic quizzing and animation software.
