Acoustics Tank

Acoustics TankThe Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) underwater acoustics laboratory is designed to support applied research and development in the area of underwater acoustics. This includes design, development, testing and calibration of underwater acoustic devices and systems such as acoustic transducers, remote sensing devices (single and multi-beam sonars), acoustic modems and acoustic mechanisms.

Aquaculture Facility

Aquaculture FacilityThe Aquaculture Facility has five independent recirculating systems capable of using fresh or salt water and two flow-through fresh water systems, live food culture laboratory (zooplankton and algae), quarantine laboratory, feed preparation area, necropsy laboratory, bacteriology laboratory, histopathology laboratory and an alarm monitoring system with 24 hour on-call personnel.

Ballast Control and Cargo Handling Simulator

Ballast Control and Cargo Handling SimulatorThis simulator is used to replicate operations conducted in the ballast control room of an oil rig. It is mounted on a two degree of freedom motion base and is supplemented by desktop trainers. Float-on/float-off vessels can also be simulated.

Dr. C. R. Barrett Library

Dr. C. R. Barrett LibraryThe Dr. C.R. Barrett Library is a unique resource, housing one of Canada's largest marine related collections. The collections support research and teaching at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University and the Engineering Technology Centre of the College of the North Atlantic. They also serve the Newfoundland and Labrador marine, fisheries and engineering industries.

Dynamic Positioning Simulator

Dynamic Positioning SimulatorThe Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) houses three different dynamic positioning simulators with custom built visualization systems designed by CMS: the Kongsberg SDP system, the KPOS system and Converteam's C-series system. These simulators are used to replicate precision manoeuvring systems that are found on vessels operating in the offshore, scientific, cable-laying and cruise industries.

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems SimulatorThe Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems Simulator can be used as an alternative to paper charts. It displays the information from system electronic navigational charts (SENC) with positional information from navigation sensors to assist the mariner in route planning and route monitoring. It also displays additional navigation-related information if required.

Fast Time Maneuvering Simulator

Fast Time SimulatorThe Fast-Time Maneuvering Simulator is used to predict the path of a ship through a waterway and can accelerate maneuvers by 1000 times normal speed or faster.

Fire Fighting Facility and Outdoor Test Tank

Fire Fighting Facility and Outdoor Test TankThe Fire Fighting Facility and Outdoor Test tank is located in Foxtrap, NL. It offers a large, environmentally secured fire field complete with marine, offshore petroleum, helicopter, and industrial pressure fire simulators, stair tower with high-angle rescue and vertical extraction capability over three stories in height and confined space environment.

Flume Tank

Flume TankThe Marine Institute is home to the world’s largest flume tank. This facility is used to carry out performance evaluations, gear tests and other observations on newly developed or existing fishing gears and other related equipment in simulated underwater and near surface conditions.

Food Processing Pilot Plant

Food Processing Pilot PlantOur 1,100 square metre Food Processing Pilot Plant is provincially registered and includes a product development kitchen, sensory analysis lab and a variety of pilot scale food processing equipment.

Full Mission Ship's Bridge Simulator

Full Mission Ship's Bridge SimulatorThe Full Mission Ship's Bridge Simulator is used to replicate operations conducted on a ship's navigation bridge. The simulator is mounted on a six degree of freedom (DOF) aviation motion base and is one of two full-motion ship's bridge simulators in the world.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) SimulatorThe Global Maritime Distress and Safety System Simulator is used to replicate emergency radio operations conducted on the bridge of a ship. The simulator is desktop based and is supplemented by a live instruments lab.

Indoor Training Tank HUET and Environmental Theatre

Indoor Training Tank and Environmental TheatreThe Indoor Training Tank HUET and Environmental Theatre located in Foxtrap, NL offers and 18 metre by 14 metre by 4 metre indoor pool with wind, waves, rain and lighting and sound control, high-fidelity helicopter underwater escape trainer based on the Sikorsky S-92 Helicopter (only one of its kind in the world) and helicopter underwater emergency breathing apparatus (HUEBA) and training chair.

Lewisporte Regional Fisheries and Marine Centre

Lewisporte Regional Fisheries and Marine CentreThe Lewisporte Regional Fisheries and Marine Centre offers ongoing marine-based training and courses and community-based education. Facilities in Lewisporte include diesel engine workshops, ship simulators, and marine software labs.

Lifeboat Launch Simulator

Lifeboat Launch SimulatorThe Lifeboat Launch Simulator is used to replicate the launching of lifeboats into high seas and with a variety of fault conditions. SurvivalQuest is a DNV certified Class S lifeboat simulator developed by Virtual Marine Technology to provide trainees with practical experience completing emergency launch exercises in a variety of sea states and weather conditions.

Marine Bioprocessing Facility

Marine Bioprocessing FacilityThis facility was established in response to significant quantities of processing discards generated from the fishing and aquaculture industries each year in Atlantic Canada. This 270 square metre facility is equipped with a variety of extraction, concentrating and drying equipment, extrusion processing equipment and a 208 litre batch biodiesel processor.

Net Loft

Net LoftThe development of fishing gears for the commercial fishing industry has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Today's modern designs are more advanced and sophisticated as a result of increasing fuel costs, the need for species- and size-selectivity, stringent bycatch restrictions, and the necessity to minimize impact on the environment.

NetSim

NetSimNetSim is a DNV certified Class S electronic navigation simulator developed by Virtual Marine Technology to provide trainees with practical experience using radar, global positioning systems and ECS systems to complete blind pilotage navigation exercises.

Pressure Testing

Pressure TestingThe Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources houses the Marine Institute's hydrostatic test chamber. The 70 liter chamber is able to simulate ocean depths of up to 1800 metres. The chamber has been used by various clients over the past several years for various purposes.

Propulsion Plant Simulator

Propulsion Plant SimulatorThe Propulsion Plant Simulator is used to replicate the operations in the control room of a ship's engine-room. The simulator has a surround sound system, is supplemented by desktop trainers and can be interfaced with the full mission bridge simulator.

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Simulator

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) SimulatorThe Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Simulator is used to replicate the operations of offshore and military work-class vehicles. The control consoles are mounted in cubicles which approximate conditions on board the vessel.

RV Gecho II

RV Gecho IIA highly sophisticated inshore fisheries research vessel, the RV Gecho II was custom built for the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystem Research (CFER) to conduct research in coastal bays with unique habitats, inshore spawning and nursery habitats. The vessel also provides CFER with the capability to monitor inshore and offshore species migration.

Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT)

Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) CentreThe Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre, located in Stephenville, is one of the premiere fire training facilities in Canada with the capability and equipment to provide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Structural, Marine and Industrial Firefighting Training.

Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN) SimulatorThe Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN) Simulator is used to replicate navigation operations on the bridge of a ship and consists of four part-task bridges, each fitted with realistic equipment and a visualization system.

Simulated Electronic Navigation Live Equipment Lab

Simulated Electronic Navigation Live Equipment LabratoryThe Simulated Electronic Navigation Live Equipment Labratory has been designed for a maximum of eight students and enables them to become familiar with the set up and operation of the various bridge gear as required by Transport Canada Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN) 1A.

Heritage Bridge Simulator

Heritage Bridge SimulatorCommissioned in 2019, the Heritage Class Ship's Bridge simulator is used to replicate operations of an offshore shuttle tanker. Fitted with realistic equipment and a visualization system, the Heritage Bridge simulator is integrated with the CMS Full Motion Bridge and the Offshore Operations simulator to allow for interaction between vessel to recreate joint operations including ship to ship transfer, towing, or joint exercises. In addition to its use in shuttle tanker operations and dynamic positioning training, the Heritage Bridge simulator is also used for BRM, Leadership and Management, Advanced Ship Maneuvering, and Polar Navigation.

Underwater Cameras/Camera Systems

Camera Systems / ROV'sThe Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) has a number of underwater cameras available for at-sea field work. Depending on the application, video signals may be viewed real-time via umbilical, or stored in self-contained recording bottles. Both standard definition and high definition (HD) cameras are available, with customizable options for variable resolution and frame rate.
