Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland

Since March 2020, the Institute has taken important steps to safeguard our campus and implement health and safety protocols for the individual and collective well-being our students, clients and employees.

As we return to campus, we’re working with Memorial’s Environmental, Health and Safety Office and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Medical Office and following provincial guidelines to put into action a comprehensive health and safety plan for the Institute.  Operational units have also developed plans for their specific areas for the health and safety of employees in their areas.

• Masks: All employees, students and visitors are encouraged to wear a non-medical mask in all public indoor spaces on campus.
• Density Parameters: The public health guidelines for physical distancing means keeping our distance from one another. Memorial has developed a density calculator that has guided the Institute’s decisions regarding maximum occupancy levels for all areas of the Institute.
• COVID-19 Safety Training: All Memorial University employees are required to complete Memorial’s online COVID-19 awareness session.
• Daily Self-Assessments: All Memorial University employees are required to use the COVID-19 daily self-assessment on the MUN SAFE app before coming to campus daily.

• Memorial University approved COVID-19 signage has been posted throughout the Marine institute. Please follow these signs directing traffic flow, entrances and exits, physical distancing, maximum occupancy, hand hygiene, and disinfecting of high touch areas and equipment

• Building Readiness and Cleaning: 
  • Monitoring all buildings and building systems
  • Enhancing cleaning protocols for all public spaces on campus
  • Monitoring and replenishing supply levels of hand soap, hand sanitizer and paper products
  • Disinfecting high-touch surfaces and equipment
  • Posting signage and directional indicators
  • Creating directional traffic flow in hallways and stairs
  • Installing barriers and protective screens
  • Removing or barricading furniture
• Classrooms, labs and workshops: Seating in classrooms, labs and workshops have been rearranged to designate seating for students to achieve physical distancing,
• Marine Institute Vehicle Use: Vehicle occupancy is restricted to one person where possible. If more than one person must travel in a vehicle, guidelines to achieve physical distancing and wearing masks have been established.
• Food Service: The MI Cafeteria is open on a limited basis however, seating is currently not available.

• The Marine Institute has a number of Student Resources available for students.

• Check-In Procedures: For public health purposes we are collecting contact information to aid in contact tracing. The information will only be used in the event that contact tracing is required.
• Students: Update your contact information in MUN self-Serve. We are using MUN Self-Serve and your course schedule to track building access and contact information. You will also be issued a fob in the first week of the Winter semester that you should use upon entry into the main entrance, west entrance and cafeteria entrance.  If you do not receive a fob please email studentsupport@mi.mun.ca.
• Support accurate tracing: Memorial University is encouraging the use the Government of Canada COVID19 mobile app to help prevent the spread while protecting your privacy.
