 Terry's Cause on Campus

Canadian runner Terry Fox once said: “Even if I don’t finish we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”‌

Students, faculty and staff from the Marine Institute and Memorial University’s St. John’s campus will be joining forces on Thursday, Sept 19 to support the second annual Terry’s CAUSE (College and University Student Engagement) on Campus.

While Memorial’s St. John’s campus participated last year, this year will be the first for MI. Participants will circle Long Pond to keep Terry Fox’s dream alive and raise money for cancer research.

Memorial is not alone in this endeavor. Universities across Canada, all the way to Simon Fraser in British Columbia will walk, run or roll to support and raise awareness for this annual event.

“As a member of the first national advisory group which oversaw the development of the Terry’s CAUSE in 2012. I am proud to support this wonderful concept at the Marine Institute and build on our 2012 inaugural year in Canada,” said Dr. Rob Shea, associate vice-president (Academic and Student Affairs) Marine Institute. “Terry’s CAUSE is a tremendous initiative which highlights the ongoing need for support and funding for those who have battled or are battling cancer and to support ongoing research to honor Terry and ensure that the hopes and dreams of all post-secondary students can be realized if we all work together. We are encouraging MI students, faculty and staff to fundraise and participate in this event for years to come.”

Terry’s CAUSE is a new program launched by the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute in partnership with universities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

The initiative aims to unite students and communities, raise money for leading-edge cancer research in Canada, provide a catalyst for building community spirit on Canadian campuses, inspire future generations with Terry’s story, engage Canadian students and recognize students on participating campuses who demonstrate qualities which mirror Terry’s.

All funds raised will go to the Terry Fox Foundation for investment in cancer research by the Terry Fox Research Institute.

Participants are encouraged to fundraise for the event or donate towards the cause.  Registration will take place in MI’s main lobby at noon, followed by a brief gathering in Hampton Hall before meeting the St. John’s campus participants at Long Pond. To register for the event online and start fundraising visit the Terry Fox Foundation website.

Terry’s CAUSE on Campus is a fitting way to recognize his legacy and provide Canadian university and college campuses with an opportunity to celebrate Terry’s accomplishments. Taking part in his legacy, students can make a difference in the lives of cancer patients at home and abroad.
