Thursday, November 19, 2015

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland held its annual Fall Presentation of Scholarships and Awards ceremony last night. In total, ninety-seven scholarships were handed out.

“Scholarships and awards were presented to students who have distinguished themselves in their respective programs through academic achievement, strong leadership skills, extra-curricular activities and community involvement,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “Our scholarship and award recipients are examples of the expertise that is generated at the Marine Institute and I am very proud of their efforts.”

Each spring and fall, MI presents a number of scholarships and awards which are made possible thanks to the generous support of a number of organizations, individuals and industry partners who place their confidence in our students.

Over the past number of years, the Institute’s portfolio of scholarships has been growing and diversifying. This ceremony marked the inaugural award ceremony for a number of new scholarships and bursaries, such as the Lieutenant Commander (Retired) Anthony Green Ayre Bursary; the W. Gary Rowe, QC Scholarships; the Jane Simoes Ré Memorial Scholarship; and the Skinner Memorial Scholarships.

“Now more than ever MI’s scholarship program reflects the wide breath of programs and years of study at the Institute, from entrance scholarships to fourth year scholarships, supporting students in degree programs to technical certificates,” continued Mr. Blackwood. “For the first time, an endowed scholarship was awarded for the Bridge Watch and Marine Diesel Mechanics Certificates, a much needed addition to MI’s scholarship offerings.”

The ceremony was held in the gymnasium at the Institute’s Ridge Road campus and was presided over by Mr. Blackwood, Margaret Allan of MI’s Industry Advisory Committee and Angie Clarke, Director of Student Affairs at the Institute.
