Global Maritime Vryhof donation enhances student learning experience at Marine Institute
Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Industry clients and students at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University’s Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) now have access to two new and unique learning tools for anchor handling training thanks to a donation from Vryhof.

The Vryhof Virtual Reality Experience equips the Institute with Vryhof’s Virtual Reality Moorings experience. It will enable students to walk on the seabed and inspect the moorings of different kinds of floaters by means of virtual reality glasses. The experience will be updated regularly to ensure students have the latest information on new equipment and installation procedures.

Vryhof is also providing scale model anchors (scale 1:36) replicating those typically used in a mooring line arrangement consisting of an anchor, five link adaptor, Global Maritime MoorLink chain swivel , studlink chain, chaser stopper and chaser. It is a scale, physical model similar to those anchors CMS trainees become familiar with in their simulation training.

“On behalf of the Fisheries and Marine Institute and the Centre for Marine Simulation, I want to thank Vryhof for their generous donation,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “This new equipment will provide our students and industry clients with an increased level of practical experience that they will be able to apply to their offshore work.”

“Global Maritime Vryhof is committed to the advancement of moorings. We do this by constantly improving our technology and also by supporting academic and training efforts. We trust that the models and the Virtual Reality Experience will provide the Centre for Marine Simulation means to enhance the operational and technical perspective of the students. Moreover, offshore activities in Newfoundland will require highly trained teams and understanding of mooring fundamentals. Global Maritime St. John's office will continue to support the Centre to further develop training materials. We look forward to further collaborations,” said Leopoldo Bello, Global Maritime Vice President for the Americas.

“CMS is home to the Hibernia Offshore Operations Simulator Facility, which provides offshore operators with advanced and customized training for the supply and support of offshore facilities and production platforms,” said Chris Hearn, director, Centre for Marine Simulation. “These new tools will provide students and clients with hands-on and virtual learning of mooring equipment used in the offshore, complementing the simulation training they receive.”

Vryhof is the world’s leading developer and supplier of offshore anchoring technology, helping clients solve challenges and cross technical thresholds through innovation founded on sound engineering and long practical experience. Vryhof’s expertise is complimented by that of its associate companies in the Global Maritime Group, allowing the organization to offer a full EPCI package from design to installation and hook-up of complete mooring systems, including project management assuming full responsibility to achieve the project objectives. This is believed an unrivalled scope in the markets served, being the offshore oil and gas, dredging and marine renewable energy industries.

In operation since 1994, the Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) is an industrial arm of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University (MI). Operating under MI's School of Maritime Studies, CMS combines its unique North Atlantic location, world-class simulation technology, and industry-driven expertise to solve the toughest simulation problems for its clients.
