Tuesday, May 30, 2017

Would you like to know more about how you can protect our oceans? Want to find out about fisheries research? Interested in learning about marine animals? Stop by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University on Saturday, June 3 for a free, family event in celebration of World Oceans Day 2017.

There will be lots to see and experience from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Check out interactive and educational exhibits and activities, visit displays, take part in fun games, explore touch tanks, make crafts and watch an animated, ocean-themed movie.

June 8 is officially recognized by the United Nations World Oceans Day. The annual event raises awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help to protect it. Thousands of leading aquariums, governments, conservation organizations, schools and individuals around the world will celebrate with fun, inspirational and educational events.

This year’s theme is ‘Our Oceans, Our Future’ and the conservation action focus is ‘encouraging solutions to plastic pollution and preventing marine debris.’

The 2017 World Oceans Day event is being organized in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Fish and Land Resources, the Fisheries Food and Allied Workers Union, World Wildlife Fund-Canada, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and the Marine Institute.
