Marine Institute Registrar Appointed

The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University has named Jennifer Howell as its registrar effective Nov. 13, 2023.

Ms. Howell has served in the position on an interim basis since August 2022. She will oversee the Office of the Registrar, including focusing on student recruitment, admissions, and enrolment services for the Institute.

“Ms. Howell is a collaborative leader with an extensive knowledge of post-secondary education and the student experience. As the Institute continues to evolve its academic and industry-response programming and elevate our student enrolment strategies, we are fortunate to have Ms. Howell in this vital role,” said Dr. Angie Clarke, associate vice-president (Academic and Student Affairs).

“We have watched Ms. Howell grow at the Institute as a professional who has demonstrated great interpersonal, management, and relationship-building skills. We are proud that she will lead our Registrar’s office to enhance our student experience from recruitment to graduation,” remarked Dr. Paul Brett, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute).

Registrar’s Role

Ms. Howell will report to the Associate Vice-President (Academic and Student Affairs) and will be responsible for student recruitment, admissions, scheduling, registration records, student administration systems, transition, and graduation for the range of campus program offerings. She will also work closely with the Institute’s three schools and maintain significant cooperative linkages across Memorial University’s campuses.

Administrative Leader

As a 17-year employee at Memorial University, she has been a team leader in managing domestic student recruitment and student engagement. For the last ten years at the Marine Institute, she has served within the Institute’s Academic and Student Affairs department as Interim Director and Enrolment Management Coordinator.

She is a well-known administrator in the higher education field in Atlantic Canada, having served as president of the Atlantic Association of Registrars and Admissions Officers for two years and Chair of its Recruitment Outreach and Planning Committee for five years.

She is a current member of Atlantic Association of Registrar’s and Admissions Officers (AARAO), Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) and Atlantic Association of College and University Student Services (AACUSS).

She has served on university committees for undergraduate studies, tuition and fees, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as well as secretary to the Institute’s Academic Council.

Ms. Howell holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Memorial University and is currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Strategic Enrolment Management from Royal Roads University.
