2013 Spring Scholarships and Awards presentation

The Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland held its annual spring presentation of Scholarships and Awards this week which recognized thirty-two students.

The ceremony took place in Hampton Hall, at MI’s Ridge Road and was presided over by Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute); Dan Crummell, parliamentary secretary for Minister of Advanced Education and Skills (Apprenticeship and Labour Market); Dr. David Wardlaw, provost and vice-president, Memorial University (Academic) and Angie Clarke, director, Academic and Student Affairs.

Scholarship recipients were from a wide array of programs at MI and consisted of students from within Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, California and India.

“The excellence of our students is displayed through the scholarships and awards we are able to provide and is evidence of a productive and promising future for our graduates,” said Blackwood. “Our hard working students distinguish themselves in their respective programs through academic achievement, strong leadership skills, extra-curricular activities and community involvement.”

The CARIS Scholarship was presented for the first time to second year ocean mapping student, Nicholas Ridgley from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador. The scholarship is provided by CARIS Geospatial Software Solutions, a company which develops, sells and supports geospatial software solutions for marine, hydrographic and land applications. CARIS software is used in MI’s ocean mapping program. CARIS has created this scholarship in an effort to further foster relations with the institute.

MI Scholarships and awards are provided by an assortment of organizations, companies, individuals and MI industry partners. The funding helps MI reward hard working students and plays a role in the institute’s ability to attract new students from across Newfoundland and Labarador and Canada.

“The oceans will play a major role in the future of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada,” said Blackwood. “These students contribute to our capabilities and one day they will lead the marine and oceans sectors and help shape our economy.”
