Dr. Rose is the Head of the Fisheries Conservation Group. He is cross-appointed to the Dept. of Biology and an adjunct professor with the Centre de Geomatique, Laval University. His research interests are in acoustics, fisheries conservation and the effects that fisheries and climate change have on fish stock dynamics. His book, "Cod: The Ecological History of the North Atlantic Fisheries", describes the history of the Grand Banks ecosystems from geological times to the present, and their fisheries.

Luiz is a post-doctoral fellow with the group. His current research involves developing methods to use acoustic data collected during DFO’s multispecies trawl surveys to quantify pelagic components of the marine ecosystem.

Matt completed his M.Sc. thesis on homing behaviour and spatial patterns of spawning cod. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate working on the use of GIS technologies to interpret spatial elements of North Atlantic fisheries ecosystems. Matt has held a NWT Science graduate scholarship and currently holds a NSERC postgraduate scholarship. Matt received the GEOIDE Communicator of Excellence Award at the 2007 GEOIDE Annual Scientific Conference.

Anna is a Ph.D. candidate working on fisheries acoustics and the ecology of the capelin, focusing on an experimental approach in Newfoundland and a survey approach in Iceland. Anna holds a scholarship from the Icelandic Research Fund for Graduate Students.

Amin is a Ph.D. candidate working on the ecological assessment of coastal fisheries in Tanzania. His work involves basic fisheries statistics, telemetry, fisheries acoustics and the use of marine protected areas for conservation of coastal ecosystems. Amin holds a CIDA scholarship under a joint Memorial-University of Dar es Salaam bilateral project.

Craig completed an M.Sc. studying cod spawning behaviour and egg production in coastal Newfoundland. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate continuing his work on spawning behaviour but extending that to small-scale movement patterns of juvenile wild Atlantic and Greenland cod. Craig holds a full scholarship from IBES (Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Science).

Grayson is a M.Sc. student at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania under the Memorial-UDSM fisheries project. Grayson's work is focussed on the seasonal movements and fisheries for the large pelagics, kingfish and little tuna.

Diana Pike was the group’s Chief Research Technician from September 2008-2009. Diana is currently a Research Technician with Agriculture Canada.

Susan was the group’s Chief Research Technician for 6 yrs, during which time she completed an M.Sc. in fisheries biology. Her research focused on cod reproduction, focusing on temporal and spatial variations in fecundity and the use of active and passive acoustics in studying spawning behaviour. Susan is currently a Fisheries Advisor with WWF-Canada.

Shannon completed an M.Sc. on capelin and shrimp feeding in the Northwest Atlantic. While at MUN, she held an NSERC postgraduate scholarship and an Albert George Hatcher Memorial Scholarship. She was also a coordinator for the Let's Talk Science Partnership Program. Following completion of her M.Sc., Shannon worked for a short while with the Inshore Rockfish group at the Pacific Biological Station in BC, and is now a Ph.D. candidate at the UBC Fisheries Centre working on rockfish.

Kat was a research assistant working primarily on icthyoplankton. She is an MMS candidate (Fisheries Resource Management) and an M.Sc. candidate in Environmental Science. Her major paper and thesis focuses on the redfish fishery of the North Atlantic.

Valérie completed an M.Sc. at Laval Univeristy under the GEOCOD project (co-supervised with Dr. Mir-Abolfayi Mostafavi, Dept. of Geomatics). Valérie's research focused on the use of GIS technologies to study spatial-temporal dynamics of fish aggregations.

Graham was post-doctoral fellow working on fish bioenergetics and the use of C and N isotopes to study food web ecology. Graham is now a Groundfish Ecologist with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland Maine.

Rick was a post-doctoral fellow working on factors that influence the reproductive potential of marine fishes. Rick is now a Research Scientist with DFO in St. John’s.

Janet was a general technician with the Chair, working on stomach analyses, cod fecundity estimates and acoustic analyses and editing. Janet is now an Environmental Officer at Memorial.

Ellen was administrator/manager of the Chair. She is now with the School of Technology at the Marine Institute.

Wade was Chief Research Technician for the first 7 years of the Fisheries Conservation Chair. He is now Fisheries Biologist at the Center for Sustainable and Aquatic Resources at the Marine Institute.

Brad is completing a Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University and was a Fulbright scholar at the Chair. His dissertation is on the politics and economics of the management of Atlantic cod and Pacific salmon. Brad was a professor at the University of Khazakstan.

Boaz completed a Ph.D. on the effects of National Parks and other Marine Protected Areas on fisheries in coastal Kenya. He is now Senior Lecturer and Acting Head of Department, Dept of Fisheries, Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya.

Paul was an associate Chair in Fisheries Conservation. He now holds a Canada Research Chair at the Ocean Sciences Centre and Biology Dept. of Memorial University and is the lead scientist in the Chone Network on Healthy Oceans. His research interests focus on benthic and larval ecology.

Brenda was a technician working primarily on ichthyoplankton. She is now a technician at the Ocean Sciences Centre.

Mike worked on several field programs. He is completing an M.Sc. on effects of organic flux on benthic communities.

Pedro completed a Ph.D. on crab and shrimp recruitment impacts on benthos. He is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Harshana completed an M.Sc. on the impacts of fisheries data quality on fisheries stock assessment and management.

Stéphane completed a Ph.D. working on the acoustic properties and shoaling behavior of Atlantic redfish. He is now a Research Scientist with NIWA in Wellington New Zealand.

Dave completed a Ph.D. on movements and distributions of Atlantic cod. He is now working with LGL in Sidney, British Columbia.

Myounghee received her Ph.D. at the University of Tokyo, during which she studied acoustic species identification with Dr. Rose. She is now working for SonarData in Australia.

Ian completed an M.Sc. on cod larval transport in Placentia Bay. He then completed a PhD at Dalhousie and is now working as a PDF there.

Richard conducted postdoctoral research on acoustic measurement of fish populations. He has since returned to his native New Zealand and is now working at NIWA in Wellington on marine acoustic surveys.

Yong was an associate with the Fisheries Conservation Chair working primarily on quantitative methods in fisheries. He is now an assistant professor at the University of Maine.

Sandy was a research assistant. She is currently working with DFO as a research technician.

Gareth completed an M.Sc. on cod distributional variability and ecosystem dynamics. After working in South Africa with CIDA at Sea Fisheries Research Unit, Gareth completed a PhD at Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute and MIT under a Fulbright International fellowship and an NSERC International scholarship. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

Martin completed an M.Sc. on sand lance biology in Alaskan waters. He is currently working in Alaska with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tom was one the Fisheries Conservation Chair’s first summer students (1997). He recently completed a Masters of Marine Science at Memorial, and is currently Assistant Head, C-ASD, Marine Institute.

Patricia completed an M.Sc. on benthic communities in Placentia Bay. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University, New Jersey.

Bruce was a research assistant from 1999-2000.

Kathrine studied acoustic methods on cod with Dr. Rose during 1996 and has since received her Ph.D from the University of Bergen. She is currently head of the unit at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen that specializes in survey methodology and fish behaviour.

Tom was a research assistant with Dr. Rose from May 1996 - Jan. 1997.
