Naval Architecture Technology Program Software

Naval Architecture Technology Program Software

Students enrolled in the Naval Architecture Technology (NARC) Diploma Program will be trained to effectively use software that is commonly used in industry, including:

AutoCAD

Autodesk has been bringing efficiencies to the design process for more than 28 years. Used by millions of people globally, AutoCAD® software is a world-leading design and documentation solution.

Offering robust 3D free-form design tools and powerful drafting and documentation capabilities, AutoCAD drives design innovation for companies of all sizes in almost all industries. NARC students use AutoCAD to prepare most of their drawing assignments and design projects.

General Hydrostatics (GHS)

Creative Systems is the originator of GHS, the world-famous PC-based simulator of vessels in fluids and fluids in vessels - for ships, yachts, docks, drilling platforms, buoys, tanks, etc. - answering such questions as:

  • How deep and at what attitude will it float?
  • How much load will it carry?
  • Will it capsize?
  • Will it survive if damaged?

NARC students will receive training on this software as part of their stability education.

MaxSurf

Maxsurf offers highly specialized tools for modeling high quality fair hulls using trimmed NURB surfaces. Also includes parametric transformation, on-the-fly hydrostatics and curvature evaluation.

Hydromax

Similar to GHS the Hydromax stability and strength module provides fast, graphical and interactive calculation of intact and damaged stability for all types of Maxsurf designs.

Rhinoceros

Rhino provides the tools to accurately 3D model and document your designs ready for rendering, animation, drafting, engineering, analysis, and manufacturing or construction.

Rhino can create, edit, analyze, document, render, animate, and translate NURBS curves, surfaces, and solids with no limits on complexity, degree, or size. Rhino also supports polygon meshes and point clouds.

HydroComp

NavCad is a software tool for the prediction and analysis of vessel speed and power performance. It also provides for the selection of suitable propulsion system components - engines, gears and propellers. Built from a very comprehensive library of algorithms, NavCad can be used for the design and analysis of virtually any type of monohull or catamaran - from large displacement vessels to fast planing craft.

PropExpert is a propeller selection tool specifically prepared for work boats and pleasure craft. It has been selected as the principal propeller sizing tool of many of the best known manufacturers and distributors of marine engines and propellers.

Microsoft Office Professional

Building on the familiar tools that many people already know, the Microsoft Office system includes programs, servers, services, and solutions designed to work together to help address a broad array of business problems. Used together, the Microsoft Office system can help you address business needs ranging from personal productivity management to complex project management.

NARC students are taught how to prepare technical reports using MS Word, and learn how use MS Excel to program spreadsheets to perform design calculations.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro

Adobe® Acrobat® X Pro software lets you deliver professional PDF communications. Create and edit PDF files with rich media included, share information more securely, and gather feedback more efficiently.

NARC students will use this software to create professional-level reports and drawings (with the aid of AutoCAD) for many of their assignments and design project submissions.

Brightspace

When you begin your studies at the Marine Institute, you will be given access to Memorial University's Brightspace system. Brightspace is a course management system that is used for students enrolled in online courses.

Many instructors in face-to-face and web-enhanced courses use Brightspace to provide course materials to their students online. Instructors have the option of requesting that their course be available online (blended classroom).

Many of the courses taught in the classroom now contain Brightspace elements, such as course outlines, schedules, course notes, course resources (content), a place for students to submit assignments and receive instructor feedback (dropbox), and a place for students to view their grades in each course (grades), plus other features that may vary by course.
