Specialized Training and Applied Research Centres
The Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) undertakes applied research and development in four key areas:
- Ocean mapping
- Ocean observing systems
The unit responds to the evolving technology needs of key ocean industries, works collaboratively with the ocean technology industry in Canada and provides work experience and employment opportunities for students and graduates of programs.
The Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) offers a complete range of services for the aquatic health, food and seafood processing, fishery by-products and aquaculture industries including:
- Applied research
- Product and process development
- Technology transfer
- Advisory services
- Industrial training
CASD hosts a modern aquaculture research facility, quarantine and histopathology laboratories, two food pilot plant facilities and has an approved Quality Management Program (QMP) in place.
The Marine Institute's Centre for Fisheries Ecosystem Research (CFER) is well-positioned to play a vital role in the future of fisheries in Newfoundland and Labrador by addressing the need for increased capacity in fisheries science research and enabling the province to better participate in federal and international fisheries management decision making.
The Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) possesses the most comprehensive suite of marine simulation capabilities in North America. Its facilities cover an entire range of training, educational, and research and development capabilities ranging from computer based part-task simulators to large and complex full mission simulators.
The Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) promotes the sustainable development of aquatic resources and protection of marine and freshwater environments. CSAR conducts applied research and development, technology transfer, at-sea testing and education in the areas of:
- Fisheries development
- Emerging fisheries
- By-catch and selectivity
- Hydrodynamics testing
- Industrial training and educational workshops
CSAR is home to the world's largest flume tank, a primary testing facility for demonstrating and testing fishing gear and marine structures.
Since 1964, community based training has been a part of the Marine Institute. The Community Based Education Delivery unit (CBED) continues this tradition, offering industrial response training. The unit's main office is located in St. John's with regional offices located in Lewisporte and Iqaluit, Nunavut.
In collaboration with industry and government CBED supports key training priorities by organizing, facilitating and leading training in these areas:
- Aquaculture
- Environmental
- Fish Harvesting
- Food Processing
In consultation with the professional marine community of the northeast coast of Newfoundland, the Marine Institute's Lewisporte Regional Fisheries and Marine Centre seeks to develop courses and programs that meet the needs of the local industry.
Through MI International, the Marine Institute participates in international projects, contract training and consultancies around the world. MI International has a large multi-disciplinary team of experienced professionals, world-class training and applied research facilities and a network of outstanding partner organizations that deliver results.
Over its 20-year history, MI International has implemented more than 120 projects in over 50 countries.
The Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) delivers a comprehensive range of safety, survival and emergency response training for offshore petroleum, marine transportation, fishing and land based industries. Through its satellite Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre located in Stephenville, it also offers emergency response training to the firefighting and aviation industries.
The OSSC works closely with industry, researchers and industry associations to improve safety technologies and practices and can design and customized courses to meet the specific training needs of its clients.
Located in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT) is one of the premiere fire training facilities in Canada with the capability and equipment to provide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Structural, Marine and Industrial Firefighting training. The SERT Centre also delivers the Marine Institute's Fire Rescue Technical Certificate program.
