Program Description

In the Bridge Watch program, you'll acquire academic skills, marine safety training, sea experience, and hands-on training. You'll be doing this by using facilities in our rigging room and on our training vessel. We work hard to train you to be effective members of a ship's watch, both on deck and on the bridge.

Our goal is to prepare you for the Transport Canada's Bridge Watchman exam. Completing the test successfully earns you a Bridge Watch Certificate, making you employable as a deckhand in the marine industry.

Program Structure

This eight month program features 16 weeks of in-class instruction, 60 days sea placement, and required three weeks marine safety training.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for admission to the Technical Certificate - Bridge Watch Program must have successfully completed, at a minimum, a High School diploma; a grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate; or other qualifications judged by the Marine Institute to be high school equivalent. Proof of physical fitness must be provided by way of a signed Seafarer’s medical. As well, candidates must submit a clear Certificate of Conduct (a certified criminal record check).
