6.0 Graduate Degree Programs

 

These programs are governed by Memorial University’s School of Graduate Studies and Senate. Application for admission to graduate studies must be made online to the School of Graduate Studies.

 

 
6.1 Graduate Diploma Programs
 
6.1.1 Applied Ocean Technology (Ocean Mapping)

 

Program Description: The Graduate Diploma in Applied Ocean Technology (Ocean Mapping) is an applied and technical program designed for students who aim to pursue a career in ocean mapping. The program includes specialized skills training that will empower students to conduct industry-ready tasks and applied research in any aspect of ocean mapping. 

 

Required Credit Hours: The program consists of 6 courses (18 credit hours).  

 

Transfer Credits: Students who successfully complete the graduate diploma may transfer the course credits earned in that program towards the affiliated master’s degree.

 

Program Delivery: The program is offered on a full or part-time basis at the Ridge Road campus of the Marine Institute but select elective courses may be available on-line.

6.1.2 Marine Studies (Aquaculture)

 

Program Description: The Graduate Diploma in Marine Studies (Aquaculture) provides students with the education, training and management level skills required to participate in aquaculture development and production.

6.2.2 Marine Studies (Fisheries Resource Management)

 

Program Description: The Master of Marine Studies (MMS) in Fisheries Resource Management (FRM) is a multi-disciplinary program of study that will provide the candidate with exposure to all dimensions of modern fisheries resource management in an international context. The program is aimed at professionals working in or intending to enter careers in fisheries management.

 

Required Credit Hours: Two options are available:

  • Course route - 10 courses (30 credit hours)
  • Major report route - 8 courses (24 credit hours) and a major report completed in accordance with General Regulation, Theses and Reports of the School of Graduate Studies.

 

Program Delivery: The program is offered on a full or part-time basis in an on-line format.

6.2.3 Marine Studies (Marine Spatial Planning Management)

 

Program Description: The Master of Marine Studies (MMS) in Marine Spatial Planning and Management (MSPM) is a multi-disciplinary academic program that provides students with both conceptual/theoretical background and practical applied skills in integrated coastal and ocean management (ICOM) and marine spatial planning (MSP). The program provides a broad level understanding of planning processes and the governance, policy/legislative, ecological, social, cultural and economic elements of coastal and ocean areas complemented by practical and applied skills for stakeholder engagement, project management and utilization of geospatial technology to support planning and management efforts.

 

Required Credit Hours: Three options are available:

  • Course and internship route – 10 courses (30 credit hours) and an internship (6 credit hours)
  • Course and research project route - 10 courses (30 credit hours) and research project completed in accordance with General Regulations, Theses and Reports of the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Course route - 12 courses (36 credit hours)

 

Program Delivery: The program is offered on a full or part-time basis in an on-line format.

6.2.4. Marine Studies (Aquaculture)

 

Program Description: The Master of Marine Studies (Aquaculture) is a multi-disciplinary program providing students with exposure to the dimensions of aquaculture practice and management required to contribute to and successfully operate aquaculture development and production.

 

Required Credit Hours: 11 courses (33 credit hours) and a 12-week internship (3 credit hours)

 

Program Delivery: The program is offered on a part or full-time basis in an on-line format. The first half of the program is offered at the Ridge Road campus of the Marine Institute and the second half is offered in an on-line format.

6.2.5 Maritime Management

 

Program Description: The Master of Maritime Management (MMM) is a comprehensive academic program that provides a broad understanding of the structure and operation of organizations and the factors that influence business decisions in the context of maritime-based organizations. It provides a maritime management focus through the development of knowledge and understanding of the nature of technical operations and the factors that have an impact on their success, as well as the ability to apply these concepts within their organizations.

 

Required Credit Hours: Two options are available:

  • Course route - 10 courses (30 credit hours)
  • Major project report route - 8 courses (24 credit hours) and a major project and report (6 credit hours)

 

Program Delivery: The program is offered in an on-line format and students will typically register on a part-time basis.

Program Delivery: The degree is research-based and normally offered full-time to students at the Ridge Road Campus of the Marine Institute.

This program is for students who aim to pursue a specific career in quantitative stock assessment of fisheries.

 

Required Credit Hours: 4 courses (12 credit hours) and a thesis. Additional courses may be required by the Supervisory Committee.

Program Description: The degree of Master of Science in Maritime Studies (Public Safety) is a research-focused master’s degree offered by the School of Maritime Studies, at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. This program is for students who aim to pursue a career in public safety, and includes skills training that will empower students to conduct publication-quality research in areas of safety and survival. The degree is normally offered to fulltime students.

 

Required Credit Hours: 12 credit hours of core course work, 3 credit hours of course work relevant to the student’s research area; and a thesis composed of at least one manuscript of original research.

 

Program Delivery: The degree is research-based and is normally offered full-time to students at the Ridge Road Campus of the Marine Institute.

6.3 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programs
 
6.3.1 Fisheries Science

 

Program Description:  This doctoral program is aimed at those who want to participate in extensive and original research that generates new fisheries science knowledge and practices. Graduates of the program will be equipped with a nationally and internationally demanded skill set that focuses on quantitative analysis, science communication, and knowledge in the management and practice of North Atlantic fisheries.

 

Admission Requirements: Admission into the Ph.D. program in Fisheries Science is normally restricted to applicants holding a master’s degree or its equivalent.

 

Program Delivery: The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is offered in Fisheries Science to full-time and part-time students

6.3.2 Maritime Studies

Program Description:  This doctoral program is aimed at those who want to participate in extensive and original research that generates new knowledge in the areas of safety and survival in maritime environments and public safety. Graduates of the program will be equipped with a nationally and internationally demanded skill set that focuses on quantitative or qualitative methods and research design, statistical analysis, applied practices, and science communication. Depending on the field of interest, a researcher may study the human factors that impact safety and survival in maritime environments, or public safety and the safe operation and mental wellness in public safety occupations.

 

Admission Requirements: Admission into the Ph.D. program in Maritime Studies is normally restricted to applicants holding a master’s degree or its equivalent with relevant background and core knowledge in, but not limited to, criminology or criminal justice, emergency management, engineering, human kinetics, maritime studies, psychology, or sociology. 

 

Program Delivery: The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is offered in Maritime Studies to full-time and part-time students.
