Altera TEAM values stand for Trust, Excellence, Accountability and Momentum. With its TEAM values Altera’s East Coast Canada team and infrastructure support the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore industry. Altera’s operations began in this region in 2015 and the company operates a fleet of three shuttle tankers (Beothuk, Norse and Dorset) with the fourth new build shuttle tanker (Altera Thule) scheduled for delivery in 2022.

The Altera TEAM Award will be granted to a student who demonstrates Altera TEAM values and is enrolled fulltime, and beyond first year, in the Nautical Science or Marine Engineering programs at the Marine Institute. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as outlined by the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. The Award will be assigned by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee, upon recommendation of faculty and a sub-committee of the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee – the Altera TEAM Award Selection Committee. Applicants must complete the Altera TEAM Award application.

This bursary was established by a donation from Gloria Barter, daughter of William Barter. William Barter was born in 1907 and lived his entire life in Bay de Verde. He was a successful fisherman, committed community leader, and founding member and chairman of the Bay de Verde Co-operative. The co-op ran a general store and a cod liver factory, and supported local fisherman by providing loans which increased their autonomy and ability to negotiate the best price for their catch.

William Barter was a member of the first town council from 1950-51 and was particularly interested in community affairs, politics and the sustainability of the fishery. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader. He believed education provided the ability to choose your path and achieve your goals, no matter what your occupation.

One bursary will be awarded annually to a student studying in the Marine Environmental Technology program. Preference will be given to a Canadian student who has completed the first year of the program. Preference will be given to a student with a particular interest in fisheries conservation. This bursary will be awarded in the winter/spring semester.

This Award was established by Cenovus Energy, a Canadian-based integrated energy company. The Award recognizes the critical role marine operations play in Cenovus’ Atlantic Region and its aim is to foster strong leaders who are driven to make positive contributions to Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore industries. The recipient will be granted a financial award and will be given preference for work placement with Cenovus and/or its subcontractors, where Cenovus would sponsor the recipient’s Sea Phase II, provided criteria for renewal is maintained. As such, recipients will have the opportunity to work in a variety of marine settings and learn from a range of professionals.

Recipients must be in full time studies in Term 3 of the Diploma of Technology in Nautical Science program at the Marine Institute and meet minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. The award is renewable for up to three academic terms providing the recipient maintains clear academic standing and providing the recipient is offered, accepts and completes in good standing the Sea Phase II placement with approved Cenovus supply chain partners (Sea Phase placement to be managed by Cenovus and Marine Institute Office of Career Integrated Learning). Preference may be given to applicants who identify as one or more of the following: a woman, an Indigenous person, a person living with disability, or a member of a visible minority (meaning persons, other than Indigenous peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour). The Award will be granted as described below by the Marine Institute/Cenovus Committee for the Cenovus Energy Future Leaders Award, which will inform the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee of the recipient for financial awarding. Applicants must complete the Cenovus Energy Future Leaders Award application.

The Duke Marine Award at the Fisheries and Marine Institute will be granted annually to a fulltime Canadian student, beyond first term, enrolled in the Marine Engineering Systems Design program or the Naval Architecture program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarship Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Scholarship Committee. Applicants must complete the Duke Marine Award Application.

Genoa Design International provides production design and 3D modeling services to shipbuilding and offshore industries around the globe.  It is one of the most sought-after production design firms in the North American shipbuilding market, and is headquartered in Newfoundland and Labrador. With collaboration as the cornerstone of their work, the team of more than 200, many of whom are Marine Institute alumni, approach every day with a focus on the core values of Put People First, Create Lasting Relationships, Make a Difference, Own It, Live Well, and Never Stand Still.

The Genoa Values Award will be granted to two students annually who are enrolled fulltime in the Naval Architecture program or the Marine Engineering Systems Design program at the Marine Institute. The Award will be assigned by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee – the Genoa Values Award Selection Committee. Applicants must complete the Genoa Values Award application.

This award of marine reference books is to be presented annually to a qualified student of the Ministry of Transport Nautical Certificate program. This award comes from the annual interest of a memorial trust fund set up by Mrs. Anne Butler in memory of her late husband who was lost at sea when the Arctic Explorer sank.

This bursary is the yearly interest from an endowment thanks to investment from the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries (NOIA), The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), and the St. John’s Oil Field Technical Society (OTS). Awarded to a student in the first year of a Diploma of Technology program.

Donated by Alpha Beta Signa Phi in remembrance of Mel Freid who lost his life in the Ocean Ranger disaster. This award is presented annually to a student who shows initiative and enterprise in the field of marine safety or to assist in a research project in marine safety.

This graduate student leadership award was established by the Fry Family Foundation, and builds on the foundation’s existing commitment to advancing and rewarding student leadership at the Marine Institute. The foundation is dedicated to building stronger communities and developing future talent for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Fry Family Foundation Graduate Student Leadership Award at the Fisheries and Marine Institute will be granted annually to one graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. The successful applicant must demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her career and Marine Institute studies, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement.

The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This scholarship will be awarded by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee. Applicants must complete The Fry Family Foundation Graduate Student Leadership Awards at the Fisheries and Marine Institute Application.

These leadership awards were established by the Fry Family Foundation, an organization that contributes significantly to student scholarships and awards throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The foundation is dedicated to building stronger communities and developing future talent for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Fry Family Foundation Leadership Awards at the Fisheries and Marine Institute will be granted annually to up to four undergraduate students enrolled in an undergraduate program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. The successful applicant must demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of his/her Marine Institute program, through academic work, professional work placements (if applicable), and community involvement. The recipient must have a record of high academic performance, at the discretion of the scholarship committee.

These awards will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Scholarship Committee and faculty recommendation. Applicants must complete The Fry Family Foundation Student Leadership Awards at the Fisheries and Marine Institute Application.

This endowed bursary was established from a gift from the Estate of Anthony Green Ayre, who joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the outbreak of World War II and served in the Atlantic and Pacific from 1941-1945. Following the war he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and became the Commanding Officer of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Naval Training Division. He was also an area officer of the Sea Cadets and devoted to community service.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, one or more bursaries will be awarded annually to full-time students who meet the academic requirements for a bursary. First priority will be given to a student(s) registered full time in the Bachelor of Maritime Studies Program or the Bridge Watch Technical Certificate. Second priority will be given to a Nautical Science student(s) studying beyond first year.

The Rose Hatfield Healthy Living Award is to be awarded annually to a student who demonstrates a high level of academic ability and dedication to healthy living. The award is in honour of Rose Hatfield, a recreation specialist at MI who has been committed to healthy living for over 25 years via her position at the Marine Institute and her involvement in activities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

This award was created from a generous contribution from the Hebron Project. The Hebron Project co-venturers are ExxonMobil Canada Properties (operator), Chevron Canada, Suncor Energy, Statoil Canada and Nalcor Energy. Awards will be available to full-time or part-time students, enrolled at any campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, who have indigenous status, a disability, or who represent a visible minority. Students with a disability should provide supporting documentation (from a medical doctor, psychologist, audiologist, rehabilitation counselor, or other professional who has specific training, expertise, and experience in the diagnosis of this condition).

Students will claim indigenous and visible minority status through self-identification. Of those eligible students, further preference will be given to students who are majoring in engineering, the geosciences, environmental science or chemistry. Normally, at least one award will be granted in each designated area and where possible, at least one award will be granted to a student in their first year of study. The Marine Institute student awards will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship.

This endowed memorial award was established from a generous gift from The Howse Family. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, the award will be given annually to a student enrolled in a Marine Institute program who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to helping other students.

The award shall be based on academic performance and contribution to fellow students’ academic and personal development. It is based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee and will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

Jamie Klein was kind, humble and loving, gracing everyone with his insights and humor. He was a world citizen who was thoughtful, compassionate, and always concerned with the well-being of others. In honor of his memory, this award is established with the hopes of encouraging youth on their own paths to change the world, celebrating students who are going an extra mile during their programs with passion, helping others and sharing knowledge and insight. Jamie took delight in being involved in ocean technology student events with his father Martin Klein, a pioneer in commercial side-scan sonar technology and ocean exploration.

This award at the Fisheries and Marine Institute celebrates a passion for caring for others and a passion for the field of ocean technology - joys that Martin and Jamie enjoyed sharing together. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment the Award will be given annually to a full time student within the School of Ocean Technology at the Marine Institute in a program dedicated to ocean exploration.

Awarding will be based upon a faculty and/or Marine Institute mentor nomination that highlights student involvement in extra circular activities related to ocean technology. The nomination letter must identify the student's involvement in the activities and highlight their initiative in helping other students succeed. The Award will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This award was established by a donation from Kraken Robotic Systems Inc. in memory of Dr. F. Mary Williams. In her capacity as Director General of the National Research Council Institute for Marine Dynamics, Dr. Williams was a catalyst for innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond. She embodied the principles of applied research and partnership with the maritime industry. These principles are ingrained in the culture of the Marine Institute, an organization that Dr. Williams collaborated with often, with faculty and staff on Arctic and oceans related projects and research. She was a review committee member integral in moving forward MI’s Master of Technology Management Program, a program that was first introduced to MI’s program offering in 2010.

One award will be given annually to a student studying beyond first year in a four year School of Ocean Technology program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. Preference may be given to a female student, recognizing Dr. Williams’ passion to support the increased participation of women at all levels in science and engineering. Preference may also be given to a student who demonstrates financial need. This award will be given in the fall semester by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee.

The Labrador Scholarship, the interest from an award presented to the Institute by Northern Telecom for its distance education program in Labrador, is awarded annually to a student from Labrador who is enrolled in a three-year technology program.

This award was established by the family and friends of Captain Patrick Miller. Captain Miller was a sea captain and well known businessman from Fogo Island. Throughout his 70+ year career within the marine industry he owned and navigated more than 30 vessels. A lifelong mariner he sailed and operated his business in local NL waters as well as along the eastern seaboard of North America.

First priority for this award is given to a student who has graduated from high school on Fogo Island and is studying fulltime, and beyond first year, in one of the following Diploma of Technology programs at the Marine Institute: Nautical Science, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or Marine Engineering Systems Design. Second priority for this award is given to a student who has graduated from high school on Fogo Island and is studying fulltime, and beyond first year, in any undergraduate program at the Marine Institute. Should the first and second priority not be able to be met in a given year, the Award can be granted to any student who has graduated from high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and is studying fulltime, and beyond first year, in the Diploma of Technology, Nautical Science program at the Marine Institute.

Within each priority, preference will be given to a demonstrated record of active community involvement, volunteer work, helping fellow students and/or service at Memorial University or in their home community. The award is granted on the recommendation of the Selection Committee and will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This award was established by two generous donations as a part of the Moving Forward Together Campaign by the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland and the Presentation Sister of Newfoundland and Labrador. Moving Forward Together is a Canada-wide campaign to bring fundamental and lasting change to Indigenous communities in Canada by supporting healing and educational programs.

Valued at $1800.00, it will be awarded to an undergraduate Aboriginal student at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, with preference given to a student beyond their first year of studies. The Award is given annually and is renewable for an additional two years. The student must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University. This award will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

On February 15, 1982, the Ocean Ranger Exploratory Drilling Platform sank, resulting in the tragic loss of the 84 crew members on board. As a memorial to this loss, an award program was established by the Ocean Ranger Disaster Fund. These awards are tenable by students who are entering or pursuing a post-secondary program of studies.

In selecting candidates, preference will be given to widows and lineal descendants (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren etc.) of victims of the disaster. In the absence of eligible candidates from this group, the award may be given to other full time students at the discretion of the Ocean Ranger Award Selection Committee.

This award was established by a generous donation from the Public Service Credit Union. Public Service Credit Union has been contributing to charitable organizations and scholarships since 2012, and is proud to be a supporter of the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Valued at $500, an award will be given annually to an undergraduate student at the Fisheries and Marine Institute who has been accepted to participate on a Marine Institute team related to a marine field of study, such as but not limited to the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Competition Team.

The award will be granted based on academic merit to a student who has displayed leadership and dedication to the team. Preference will be given to a student within the School of Ocean Technology. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee upon Marine Institute Faculty nomination.

This award has been developed in memory of Mr. Ian J. Reid, an individual who contributed greatly to his community. He was a veteran of World War 2 and maintained an active naval connection, and also served his community in a volunteer capacity with numerous community organizations. He was a smart business leader and was delighted to be the first chair of the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation.

This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee. Preference may be given to financial need.

This endowed bursary was established by the family of the late Roy A. Russell in recognition of the interest Mr. Russell had in providing employees with an opportunity to excel in their chosen activity and to achieve new goals. The bursary will be valued at a portion of the income on the endowment and will be awarded annually.

The recipient will be an entrance student enrolled in the first year of any program at the Marine Institute. The eligible student would have graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador situated off the Avalon Peninsula. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a bursary as defined by the University. The bursary will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee.

The Science and Technology Fair Marine Institute Award has been established through monies given to the Marine Institute to support the Institute in fostering participation in fisheries and marine sectors. It will be offered annually to the senior team (maximum of 2 recipients) of a regional science and technology fair project in Newfoundland and Labrador with the most innovative marine and/or fisheries related senior project.

The Award amount will be given upon entrance to the Marine Institute, in the academic year following graduation from high school. The Award is a $1,000 entrance award for any undergraduate program at the Marine Institute and is renewable in the second semester. This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee, upon recommendation from the subcommittee of the scholarship committee who judges the senior projects at the science and technology fair.

This leadership award was established by the Fry Family Foundation, an organization that contributes significantly to student scholarships and awards throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The foundation is dedicated to building stronger communities and developing future talent for Newfoundland and Labrador. The Vice-President’s Fry Family Foundation Excellence in Leadership Award at the Fisheries and Marine Institute will be granted annually to an undergraduate student in the final semester of a three or four year program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute.

The successful applicant must demonstrate outstanding leadership throughout the course of their Marine Institute program, through academic work, professional work placements, and community involvement. The recipient must have a record of high academic performance, at the discretion of the scholarship committee.

This award will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Scholarship Committee and faculty recommendation. The Bruce Wareham Memorial Award in Seafood Quality was established by Icewater Seafoods, the family-owned company Bruce formed in 2004 at the age of 61. During his 55 year career in the seafood industry, Bruce was a leader in innovation, adaptation to change, and quality-focused seafood processing.

This award recognizes an individual enrolled in the second term of the Advanced Diploma in Food Safety at the Marine Institute who exhibits the characteristics that Bruce himself demonstrated and valued. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University. The award will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee, upon recommendation of a sub-committee of the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee - the Bruce Wareham Memorial Award in Seafood Quality Selection Committee. Applicants must complete the Bruce Wareham Memorial Award in Seafood Quality Award application.
