This scholarship was established by Algoma Central Corporation. Algoma is a leading Canadian shipping company, owning and operating the largest Canadian flag fleet of dry-bulk carriers and product tankers operating on the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Waterway. Algoma operates self-unloading dry-bulk carriers, gearless dry bulk carriers and product tankers. The Company is a leader in dry-bulk and liquid bulk transportation focused on meeting the special needs of customers that ship products on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Waterway.

Algoma’s dry-bulk fleet includes vessels of differing sizes and configurations, providing flexible shipping options for customers. Two scholarships will be awarded annually to fulltime students beyond first year at the Marine Institute, one in the Nautical Science Program and one in the Marine Engineering Program. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. Initial preference will be given to students who have completed a work term with Algoma with secondary preference given to a high-achieving student in each of the two programs. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This scholarship was established by the Human Resources Department at Memorial University. The scholarship will be valued at a portion of the interest on the endowment and will be awarded annually. To be eligible, candidates must be enrolled full-time in the third year of the Marine Environmental technology program.

Candidates can be nominated by the students in the Marine Environmental Technology class, and nomination forms are available in the Student Affairs office at the Marine Institute. Final selection will be made by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee with first preference given to candidates of any age who has demonstrated academic ability, high energy and compassion toward others.

Atlantic Towing is part of the J. D. Irving Group of Companies with operations including servicing and development in the offshore industries off Newfoundland and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. The company has had a long-standing relationship with the Memorial University Fisheries and Marine Institute working as a key partner in work term placement and graduate employment of our seafaring students. The scholarship will be awarded two times per year, one scholarship in the Fall and one in the Spring scholarship ceremony.

The Fall scholarship recipient will be a Nautical Science Student who has completed their first year - students must meet the general scholarship eligibility criteria and must be a resident of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador. Initial preference for both scholarships will be given to students who have completed a work term with Atlantic Towing, but if that criteria cannot be met the scholarship will be awarded based on the above criteria, but excluding work term location.

This scholarship, the yearly interest from an endowment established by the Honourable Mr. Justice Fintan J. Aylward, Q.C., (a former Chairman of the Board of the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics and of the Marine Institute) is awarded to a student entering the first year of a diploma program at the Institute who has demonstrated an interest in marine law or marine safety.

This scholarship is given in memory of a former student, Andrew Baker, and is awarded to a student in second year of the Marine Engineering Diploma of Technology program. The scholarship will be awarded based on the student’s performance in first year Communication Skills courses.

This scholarship, the yearly interest from an endowment donated by Dr. C. R. Barrett on his retirement as President of the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics, will be awarded to a deserving Diploma of Technology student.

This scholarship, the yearly interest from an endowment to be awarded to a deserving diploma student who plans to continue his/her studies at the Institute, was donated by Dr. C. R. Barrett in memory of his father.

This scholarship, the interest from an endowment in memory of a former student, is presented in alternate years to a student in second or third year of the Marine Engineering program or the MOT Engineering program who has demonstrated high academic ability and a strong sense of initiative and perseverance.

This scholarship was established to honour the memory of Tom Best through generous gifts from his wife, Lynn Best, his five daughters, the Petty Harbour Fisherman’s
Co-operative Society and countless community members who have been positively impacted by Tom’s leadership in the fisheries.

Tom Best was a fiercely proud inshore fish harvester who dedicated his life’s work to advocating for sustainable fisheries and communities. Chair of the Petty Harbour Fishermen’s Committee and founding President of the Petty Harbour Fishermen's Co-operative, Tom also served on multiple local and national committees related to the fishing industry. Privileged to support others around the globe in their quest for sustainable fisheries and co-operative development, in 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time student from Newfoundland and Labrador studying in the School of Fisheries at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. First priority is a student enrolled in the Master of Marine Studies (Fisheries Resource Management). Second priority is a student enrolled in the Master of Science in Fisheries Science (Fisheries Science and Technology) whose research is focused on sustainability, resource development or a line of research to enhance fisheries outreach or education in rural NL.

The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. This scholarship will be awarded by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee. This scholarship requires applicants to complete an application form.

This scholarship was established by the friends and colleagues of Ed Bowdring as a memorial to an exceptional photographer who has left a valuable photo record of the people of the land and the sea.

The scholarship will be valued at a portion of the interest on the endowment and will be given annually. It is awarded to a student who demonstrates a creative use of video or still photography as part of their studies, or develops an innovative media-related project for the benefit of rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

This scholarship is awarded to a student studying engineering technology at the Marine Institute and is valued at a portion of the income on the endowment.

This scholarship will be awarded to a maximum of 3 students who are entering the Marine Engineering Diploma of Technology program who are Canadian citizens. This scholarship is renewable for up to 3 years at a value of $3000 per year. Students seeking renewal of the scholarship must remain in scholarship standing at the Institute.

This Scholarship was established by the Canadian Coast Guard Newfoundland Region Alumni Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting scholarships, outreach, art and education and the preservation of maritime heritage. In addition, this Scholarship reflects the alumni group members’ own careers and those of their colleagues.

Valued at $500 annually, the Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland who is in a Technical Certificate program (Bridge Watch or Marine Diesel Mechanics) or in the first year of study in a Diploma of Technology program (Nautical Science or Marine Engineering).

The scholarship will alternate annually between a Technical Certificate student and a Diploma of Technology student as described above. The first round of selection will be awarded to a Diploma of Technology Student (Nautical Science or Marine Engineering). Recipients must meet minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University. Preference will be given to a student with financial need. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This Scholarship was established the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) St. John’s, an organization committed to promoting equality for women and girls. It will be awarded annually to women who are enrolled in full-time studies at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The number and value of the scholarships are determined on a year by year basis by the CFUW Scholarship Committee. The recipient must have graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as defined by the university. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

The Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers (NL Branch) Scholarship endowment fund was established through matched gifts from the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers (National) and the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers (NL Branch). The establishment of this endowment follows a long history of recognizing and celebrating marine engineering student success at the Marine Institute, dating back to a Canadian Institute of Marine Engineers prize that was established in 1965 at the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment the scholarship will be given annually at the Marine Institute Winter/Spring scholarship ceremony to a fulltime student with scholarship standing studying beyond first year in the Marine Engineering Program or the Marine Engineering Systems Design Program. The scholarship will be awarded alternately between these programs. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

Cyr Couturier established the Sustainable Aquaculture Scholarship at the Marine Institute in 2004 and for the 30th awarding in March 2020 it was renamed the Cyr Couturier Sustainable Aquaculture Scholarship.

An Aquaculture Scientist and the Chair of Aquaculture Programs at the Marine Institute, his areas of research have included enhanced farm production, environmental management and aquaculture interactions. He has held numerous positions on volunteer boards, both academic and socioeconomic related to sustainable rural and economic development across Canada. He has been president / chair of same many times. Cyr has received many awards for his contributions to education, research and development in sustainable aquaculture from provincial, regional and national organizations.

As accomplished as his career has been, one of his greatest achievements is the connection with his students and their successes. He has mentored and supported hundreds of post-graduate students (diploma, MSc, PhD), junior and high school, and adult learners over a full range of fisheries, aquaculture, and environmental science programs. Through international projects, he has also assisted and supported hundreds of seafood farmers in applying sustainable aquaculture practices to advance their livelihoods and wellbeing.

The scholarship will be awarded to one or more students in the second semester of the Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture Program. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This scholarship has been established with commitment from Andrew and Christine Daley. The Daley family has a long standing relationship with the Marine Institute. A number of family members are alumni of the Institute and the family’s long standing commitment to the provincial fishery has provided opportunity for various training partnerships. Two scholarships will be awarded annually in the Fall scholarship ceremony. One will be awarded to a 3rd year Naval Architecture student and the other to a Nautical Science student.

The Duke Marine Scholarship at the Fisheries and Marine Institute was established in 2022, celebrating the company’s expansion to Newfoundland and Labrador, where in their new office designers and engineers are working alongside the National Ship Building Strategy (NSS). The Duke Marine Scholarship at the Fisheries and Marine Institute will be granted annually to a fulltime Canadian student, beyond first term, enrolled in the Marine Engineering Systems Design program or the Naval Architecture program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. First priority will be given to Indigenous students. Second priority will be given to a student who self-identifies as a woman, or as a gender-diverse person or as a black or racialized person. This scholarship will be granted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This scholarships in memory of Wayne Dalton is awarded to a student in the second or third year of the Nautical Science or Marine Engineering Technology Program. Preference shall be given to a student from Baltimore High School.

This scholarship comes from the yearly interest of a trust fund donated by the family, friends and associates of the late Donald W. K. Dawe, Q.C., the first chairman of the Board of Governors of the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics. It will be awarded annually to a deserving student who has successfully completed at least one year at the Institute. Preference may be given to a student from rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to continue his/her studies at the Institute.

This endowed scholarship was established by the family of Frank Dopplinger, former Chairman of the Fishing Industry Advisory Board, as a memorial of his contributions to the Newfoundland Fishing Industry. It is awarded annually to a student in a fisheries-related program based on academic performance.

The Cory Eddy Memorial Scholarship is named after Corey Eddy, a graduate of MI’s Marine Engineering Systems Design program who passed away in the Cougar Flight 491 crash. Annually funded by family and friends through funds raised at the Corey Eddy Memorial Golf Tournament, Scholarship is awarded to a student beyond first year in the Marine Engineering Design program.

The Randy Emberley Memorial Scholarship, donated by his family, is given in memory of Randy Emberley, a former graduate of the Marine Institute. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student in Nautical Science who has graduated high school in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This scholarship in memory of Captain William (Bill) Ennis, a Marine Institute faculty member and prominent Newfoundland fishing captain, is given to a student in the Bachelor of Maritime Studies program who has completed the Nautical Science diploma program at the Marine Institute.

The ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship is a national scholarship given by ESRI Canada recognizing MI for a strong, multidisciplinary focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in MI’s new Joint Diploma/Degree in Ocean Mapping.

This scholarship, the yearly interest from an endowment by the family of Charles Evans, a former student of the Marine Institute, is awarded to a student in Nautical Science, upon the recommendations of the Head of the School of Maritime Studies.

This endowed scholarship was established in 1988. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment the scholarship will be given annually to a student at the Marine Institute and will be awarded based on academic performance. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This scholarship is the yearly interest from an endowment thanks to investment from the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries (NOIA), The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), and the St. John’s Oil Field Technical Society (OTS). Awarded to a student in the first year of a Diploma of Technology program.

In 1997 a flotilla of pleasure boats sailed from Toronto to St. John’s to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Cabot’s landing in 1497. The members contributed to a fund to establish this endowed scholarship to assist a student studying in the area of Marine Environment. This scholarship, the legacy of this 1997 commemorative flotilla, is presented to a student entering the Bachelor of Technology Program. Preference shall be given to students from Marine Environmental Technology.

Awarded annually to the student with the highest average in the institute by the Friends of India Association.

Neil Gall was a natural relationship builder with a thriving career in oceans related research, development and policy. He was Executive Director of the national research network, MEOPAR (Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response Network). He also had been Executive Director of “Bridges”, an ocean technology marketing initiative at the Marine Institute. Earlier, as Manager of Ocean Technology Partnerships he played a key role in the development and implementation of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s ocean technology development strategy, “Oceans of Opportunity,”.

Neil Gall was a charismatic man with a sharp mind, a quick wit, and a warm heart that he shared with his loving family and extended circle of colleagues and friends. This memorial scholarship was established from a collective gift from his family, friends, colleagues and employers. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment the scholarship will be given annually to a fulltime student with scholarship standing studying beyond first year in a four year program at the School of Ocean Technology at the Marine Institute.

In awarding this scholarship preference will be given to candidates who have leadership characteristics and have made significant contribution to student and/or community leadership, as demonstrated in a faculty member’s letter of support. Preference will also be given to a student focusing on underwater vehicles. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

The Governor General’s Bronze Medal is awarded at Graduation to the student who has the highest average in the final year of a three year program. Students must have carried a full academic load.

The Laura C. Halfyard Scholarship for Women was established by Dr. Laura C. Halfyard, a Marine Institute faculty member and alumna, who wishes to encourage young women in their chosen career option. It will be awarded to a female student who is enrolled full-time. The recipient must have either graduated from a high school in rural Newfoundland and Labrador or contributed to rural marine communities through their field of studies.

The Sidney A. Hann Memorial Scholarship honours the memory of Sidney Hann, a Marine Institute graduate and pioneer of the provincial and national fishing industry. The scholarship was awarded annually beginning 2012 through a collective gift from friends, family and industry and was endowed in 2022 through a gift from the Estate of William Fox.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time student enrolled in a program within the School of Fisheries at the Marine Institute. Recipients must have graduated from high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This Scholarship was established by the Harbour Grace Shrimp Company Limited, a private company in the commercial fishery with a northern shrimp offshore fishing license for operation on the east coast and more northern waters of Atlantic Canada. The company is also involved in a partnership arrangement of another northern shrimp offshore fishing license with indigenous partners. The company further owns east coast commercial fishing quotas and has access to a number of different fish species and vessel licenses. The company promotes business in the wider community by encouraging technology transfer and partnership arrangements through product and market development for future generations.

Two scholarships will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee to students enrolled fulltime in the Bridge Watch Technical Program at the Marine Institute, one awarded in the Fall semester (an entrance scholarship) and one in the Winter semester (awarded based on performance in the Fall semester). Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This Scholarship was also established by the Harbour Grace Shrimp Company Limited. Two scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled fulltime at the Marine Institute, one awarded in the Fall semester and one in the Winter semester. First priority will be for a student in the Marine Engineering Technology Program, second priority is the Marine Engineering Systems Design Program.

This scholarship is presented to a full-time student entering the Bachelor of Technology program who has graduated from the Electrical Engineering program at either the Marine Institute, Cabot College, or College of the North Atlantic and who has maintained a minimum of 70% average throughout the diploma program.

This scholarship program was created by a generous contribution from the Hebron Project. The Hebron Project co-venturers are ExxonMobil Canada Properties (operator), Chevron Canada, Suncor Energy, Statoil Canada and Nalcor Energy. Scholarships will be awarded to female students who are enrolled in full-time or part-time studies at any Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland who are majoring in engineering, the geosciences, environmental science or chemistry.

Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. Where possible at least one scholarship will be awarded to a student in their first year of study. For students at the St. John’s or Grenfell Campus the awards will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards upon recommendation of the appropriate Dean or Department Head. The Marine Institute student awards will be granted by the Marine Institute Scholarship.

Endowed scholarship by the widow of the late President of the Canadian Saltfish Corporation, in memory of her husband, awarded annually to second or third-year diploma students and advanced diploma students in the School of Fisheries.

This scholarship was originally established in 1997 and endowed in 1998 by the Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. (HMDC) as part of its ongoing commitment to enhance educational opportunities for students in areas related to the offshore petroleum industry.

This scholarship is tenable at the Marine Institute and is awarded annually by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee to one or more (one female student and one male student) in either a second or third year Marine Environmental Engineering Technology program, based on academic performance. The candidates must be of scholarship standing, but consideration may also be given to financial circumstances.

This scholarship in memory of three students is presented to a student enrolled in a technology program. Preference may be given to a student in the Marine Engineering program.

This scholarship, in memory of Chester and Maude Keeping who had a long association with both the marine and fishing industries and who valued education highly, is given to a student in either the second or third year of a technology program.

Endowed scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving Intermediate Student in Nautical Science of high academic achievement and who is recommended as having a commitment to improving safety in the marine environment.

The Dr. Aidan Maloney Scholarship in Fisheries (Resource Management) was established through a generous gift by Dr. Aidan Maloney, who served the fishery of Newfoundland and Labrador in both the private and public sectors for almost 50 years.

This scholarship, valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, will be given annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in the Master of Marine Studies – Fisheries Resource Management program at the Marine Institute. If the above criteria cannot be satisfied, second preference will go to a full-time graduate student conducting fisheries related research in the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research.

A total of four scholarships shall be awarded each year. Two shall be given to students in either second or third year of Nautical Science program and two shall be given to students in either the second or third year of the Marine Engineering program. Recipients shall be residents of either Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador.

Marine Institute Bronze Medals, presented at Graduation, are awarded to students with the highest standing in the final year of their programs.

The Marine Institute Faculty Association Fall Scholarship was established in 2022 and is an endowed scholarship made possible through a second, collective gift from Marine Institute faculty that was raised over many years while faculty were members of the original Marine Institute Faculty Association. Most of the original contributing faculty members have since become Marine Institute retirees. The first collective gift in 2016 provided for an endowed scholarship under the association’s name that is awarded in the winter semester.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, this second scholarship will be given annually at the Marine Institute Fall scholarship ceremony to a fulltime student with scholarship standing studying beyond first year in a three or four year program at the Marine Institute. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

The Marine Institute Faculty Association Scholarship Fund was established through a collective gift from Marine Institute faculty that was raised over many years while faculty were members of the Marine Institute Faculty Association. Most of the original contributing faculty members have since become Marine Institute retirees.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment the scholarship will be given annually at the Marine Institute Winter/Spring scholarship ceremony to a fulltime student with scholarship standing studying beyond first year in a three or four year technical program at the Marine Institute. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This scholarship may be awarded to students in any program eligible for scholarships.

The Marine Institute Student Union has established this scholarship and it is awarded on the basis of academics and involvement in student affairs.

The Marine Safety Scholarship at the Fisheries and Marine Institute is valued at a portion of the income on the endowment. One or more scholarships will be awarded annually to students attending the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The recipients must meet the academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University. One or more of the scholarships may be awarded based on faculty nomination of demonstrated learning in marine safety excellence. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

These scholarships are awarded to students entering the technology program based on high school academic performance.

This scholarship, established from the interest of an endowment by members of the Canadian Coast Guard in the Newfoundland and Maritime Regions in memory of three colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty, is awarded annually to a second or third year student in Maritime Studies.

This scholarship was established by Dr. Hugh Miller, Memorial University alumnus, retired professor and administrator and long-time supporter of student success. Shortly after the Marine Institute (MI) joined Memorial University in 1992, Dr. Miller came to MI in 1994 as Associate Executive Director. During his tenure he led the transition of the academic governance at the Institute to within the university system and facilitated the Institute’s expansion into degree offerings, such as the Bachelor of Maritime Studies in 1995 and the Bachelor of Technology in 1997 - each the first of its kind offered across Canadian universities, and also the Masters of Maritime Studies (Fisheries Resource Management) in 1997 - the university’s first degree totally devoted to fisheries.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, this scholarship will be given annually to a fulltime graduate student studying beyond first semester in a research-based masters program at the Marine Institute. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This scholarship will be awarded as described below by the Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

Donated by his wife and children as a memorial to Captain Wilfred B. Morgan, Master Mariner, who served as a Master with C.N.R. and was a Master of the Institute’s M.V. Beinir, this scholarship is awarded annually to a Nautical Science student entering second year. Preference shall be given to a student from the Labrador coast.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering the Marine Institute.

The company has had a long standing relationship with the Marine Institute and Memorial University, working as a key partner in work term placement and graduate employment of seafaring students, and this scholarship reflects the desire to continue to foster this positive relationship.

The scholarships will be awarded in both the Fall and Spring scholarship ceremonies. The fall scholarship recipients will be Nautical Science and Marine Engineering students beyond first year; for the Spring scholarship, preference is for a Marine Engineering student who has completed their second sea phase in the fall semester. Students must meet the general scholarship eligibility criteria and have a superior work term evaluation.

Initial preference for the scholarship will be given to students who have completed a work term with Oceanex, with secondary preference given to a high-achieving student in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

The Captain Peter and Mrs. Olive Parsons Memorial Scholarship commemorates a Newfoundland master mariner who knew the power of the sea and his wife who recognized the value of education. The interest from the endowment is awarded annually to a student in either the second or third year of the Nautical Science Diploma of Technology Program who is a native Newfoundlander or Labradorian, or whose parents are natives of the province.

This Scholarship was established by the Pikalujak Fisheries Limited Partnership with a commitment of $5,000 annually. Pikalujak Fisheries Limited Partnership is the owner of a Northern Shrimp Fishing License whose partnership consists of the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (the economic arm of the Nunatsiavut Government), the Labrador Sea-2004 (owned by Steinar Engeset), and Ocean Prawns Canada Ltd. (owned by Kristian Jensen). The link between Pikalujak Fisheries Limited Partnership and the Marine Institute has developed over the course of the Marine Institute’s extensive work in Labrador.

This scholarship has been established, reflecting and further fostering the positive relationship between Pikalujak Fisheries Limited, the Nunatsiavut Government and the Marine Institute. Two scholarships of $1,250 each will be awarded in the fall semester and two scholarships of $1,250 each will be awarded in the winter semester. Initial preference will be given to a Marine Institute student who is a beneficiary of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. Second, third and fourth preference will be given to an indigenous Marine Institute student from Newfoundland and Labrador (2nd), Atlantic Canada (3rd), or Canada (4th).

The scholarship is awarded to a certified fish harvester or a dependent who is entering the second year of a three-year diploma of technology program.

These endowed undergraduate scholarships were established through a generous gift from the estate of the late W. Gary Rowe (1944-2010), lawyer, art collector and philanthropist. Mr. Rowe graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Laws degree before being called to the bar in Newfoundland in 1970. In 1972 he was a founding partner of the firm Chalker, Green and Rowe, which grew to become one of the largest in St. John’s with more than 20 lawyers at the time of its merger with the regional firm McInnes Cooper in 2000. Mr. Rowe was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, one or more scholarships will be awarded annually to students attending the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated financial need. The recipients must have graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and meet the academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University.

Two scholarships will be awarded to qualified second and third year students in fisheries programs. The trust fund is a donation by the family of the late Hazen A. Russell, who made a major contribution to the development of the Newfoundland fishing industry.

These scholarships honour the memory of an outstanding businessman whose success was due in no small measure to his commitment to quality control and technical innovation.

Secunda manages a harsh-weather fleet of offshore support vessels servicing major oil and gas companies in Atlantic Canada. Secunda, founded in Nova Scotia, has a fleet of six vessels utilizing highly experienced sailors, a maritime work ethic, and a philosophy of providing a superior service to its customers. The company has developed a relationship with the Marine Institute working as a partner in work term placement and graduate employment of seafaring students.

In an effort to foster the positive relationship between Secunda Canada and the Marine Institute and to expand on its tradition of investing in diverse set of young people entering the marine industry, the company has established this scholarship. The scholarship recipients will be a first year marine engineering or nautical science students who meet the general scholarship eligibility criteria with first preference to given to female, indigenous and visible minority students in their first year and second preference to female, aboriginal and visible minority students beyond their first year.

This Scholarship was established by Captain Rex Simmonds and his wife Mrs. Paula (Simms) Simmonds in memory of their fathers, two gentlemen who had a long association with the shipping and fishing industries. Captain Michael J. Simmonds spent a lifetime on the water; he first skippered vessels around Newfoundland and Labrador for 26 years and then went on to pursue a career in the fishery. Mr. Simms was engaged in the fishery for 40 years.

This scholarship is awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee and presented at the Marine Institute Fall scholarship ceremony to a student in the Marine Studies (Marine Spatial Planning and Management) Master’s Degree, and is based on entrance standing. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland.

This scholarship was established by Captain Rex Simmonds and his family to recognize the importance of lifelong learning and the valued relationship that Captain Simmonds has had with the Marine Institute over many years. Captain Simmonds has returned to the Institute for retraining and further certification with a constant curiosity and determination to excel further in his marine career.

This scholarship is established to support and celebrate student success and shall be awarded annually in the Fall to a student in second year Nautical Science, based on academic merit. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland.

This endowed memorial scholarship was established from a gift from Captain José M. Simoes Ré, husband to Jane Simoes Ré. Originally from Portugal, Captain José M. Simoes Ré has had a long standing relationship with the Marine Institute as an instructor in the School of Maritime Studies, teaching various levels of students enrolled in both traditional and industry programs. Earlier, he studied at the College of Fisheries (a predecessor of the Marine Institute).

Originally from Newfoundland, Jane Simoes Ré (née Kennedy) was a grade school teacher. This scholarship is established as a testament to Jane’s passion for education and for her support of her husband’s teaching career at the Marine Institute. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in their final year of a Nautical Science program at the Marine Institute based on academic performance in the program’s second year of study.

This term scholarship was established by a generous donation from the Estate of Edith and Robert Skinner. Robert Skinner (1920-2008) and Edith Skinner (1922-2010) spent most of their married years living in Pasadena, NL, where they operated a motel as well as two hunting and fishing lodges in Labrador. The Skinners believed strongly in the importance of fisheries and wildlife management and conservation.

One or more scholarships will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student(s) entering full-time studies at the Fisheries and Marine Institute who have graduated from a High School in Western Newfoundland and Labrador (that is west of Grand Falls but including Labrador). The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as outlined by Memorial University of Newfoundland, with a preference for students with demonstrated financial need.

Captain Norman Small was from Moreton’s Harbour and was skipper on several International Grenfell Association (IGA) vessels from the 1950s until his passing in 1970, including the Strathcona III, the Maravel and the Albert T. Gould. Perhaps his most famous trip was when he took Helge Ingstad as a passenger on the hospital boat the Albert T. Gould, as Ingstad documented in his 1969 book – Westward to Vinland, The Discovery of Pre-Columbian Norse House-sites in North America.

In 1970, shortly after Captain Small’s passing, the IGA featured Captain Small in its newsletter, Among the Deep Sea Fishers, describing a man whom would long be remembered for his kindness and interest in the people who live in northern NL and his innumerable acts of kindness to the members of the staff and station nurses of the many nursing stations along the coast.

The scholarship was made possible through the efforts of colleagues and friends of Captain Small with whom he worked and served for over 15 years as captain with the IGA. This scholarship is awarded to a first year student entering the Institute from the area historically serviced by the IGA.

This scholarship was established by the St. John’s Port Authority to recognize the academic achievements of students studying in the marine fields. Preference shall be given to students in second and third year Nautical Science.

Two scholarships shall be awarded to students entering their final year of studies. In selecting candidates for the scholarships, the Scholarship Committee will consider academic achievement, participation in Institute activities, and the demonstration of personal qualities appropriate to the student’s chosen field of endeavour.

CARIS software is widely used in the Ocean Mapping program at the Marine Institute. In an effort to further foster the positive relationship between Teledyne CARIS and the Marine Institute, this scholarship has been established. It is awarded upon faculty nomination to a student in the School of Ocean Technology Ocean Mapping Program who is proficient in CARIS software.

Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as outlines by Memorial University of Newfoundland. Teledyne CARIS may also choose to provide additional software support to the recipient. The scholarship will be awarded by the Marine Institute Scholarship Committee.

This scholarship was established through a contribution from Toromont Cat to the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. Toromont Cat was established in 1993 and is a division of Toromont Industries, a publicly traded, diversified growth company incorporated in 1963. The company enjoys over 300 machine models and specialized attachments in its product line, a host of allied equipment and technology partners, and varied service and rental options.

Toromont Cat’s relationship with the Marine Institute spans many years, specifically in its valued industry linkages with Marine Institute alumni. This scholarship is awarded to a fulltime student in the Marine Engineering or Marine Engineering Systems Design program. This scholarship will be given in the fall semester by the Fisheries and Marine Institute Scholarships Committee.

Valued equally at a portion of the income on the endowment, The J. J. Ugland Memorial Scholarship, will be awarded to one marine engineering student and one nautical science student. The J.J. Ugland Memorial Scholarship is for first-year MI students and is renewable for one year if scholarship standing is maintained.
